EARLY AFRICAN MONASTERIES

(Or why so many African Kemetian monks and nuns?)

According to Palladius, the African Saint Anthony established Christian monasticism. Monk colonies sprang up at Nitria and Scete. Saturday, and Sunday services. Monks held other devotions in their individual cells. Each monk had a solitary life. In the early Christian period, it proved difficult to find a common rule (or way of living).

Curiously, the African Essenes-Therapeutae (the Christian-precursor of strict Jewish communities in which Blessed Virgin Maryam, Yusef, and Our Lord, Yeshua, Jesus the Christ were quite familiar), had similar cell, living arrangements at Alexandria, Kemet.

Philo, the old writer, Philo, said of the Therapeutae cells:

“Each house contains a consecrated room, called a sanctuary (semneion) or closet (monasterion). Closeted there, officials initiate them into the mysteries of sanctified life. Nothing is taken into it. Neither food nor drink. No thing necessary for the body’s needs, except but laws and oracles from the mouth of prophets, psalms, and anything else fostering and perfecting knowledge and piety.” – paraphrasing De Vita Contemplativa

And according to Palladius, Saint Pachomius set up the first coenobium, monastery of common life at Tabennisi, Kemet. This was around 315 A.D. to 320 A.D. Palladius linked his group of established monasteries as now seen in the West (now called an “order’). A superior ran the place. Participants vowed obedience to the “rule” of life.

Nuns also lived in monasteries like the Saint Pachomius’ type. These often would in double monasteries, women on one side, men in the other institution. The women often made the men’s clothes, tonsures, habits. Suspicions ran rampant, so Emperor Justinian finally stopped these double institutions.

It is said that Kemet was the granary of Mighty Rome, and the oppressive taxes proved more incentive for those that could to run to the desert, and then worship God. Further, it was written that even in the desert, a plot of “cultivated, green land” was not far.

AFRICAN CHURCH DECLINE

A Greek proverb told by philosophers Aristotle and Pliny said, “Africa is always producing something new!” And something new it did.

While the African Church wrestled with heresies for survival, the land Vandals had conquered was about to be retaken by a Sable scourge, waving the banner and scimitar of Al Islam. God had used the broom principle before with Cyrus the Great.

Many were black, in the New World definition, though some scholars would rather vaguely define them as a Moslem people, Berber, and Arab mixture. Of course, the ruling men of Apartheid Johannesburg, South Africa, or rural Mississippi in the 1950s would call them something else.

In Roman Latin, they were Mauri or Maurus. In Greek, they were the Moros. They were named from their territory, (one of the) Mauretania, which partially included Algeria and Northeastern Morocco.
Spilling across Roman Lusitania, Hispania, Baeticia (Spain) and part of Galacia (including Portugal) around 711 A.D. the Moors as we know them created the Andalusian civilization, fusing African, Arab, and Spanish blood strains and culture as they went.

(Interestingly, during the Second Punic War of 218 B.C. Hispania-Lusitania and Baeticia sections to the Tagush River— the Carthagenians were allied against the Romans.

Through the efforts of Henry of Burgundy, Portugal gained independence from Spain about 1094 or 1095A.D.

The Moors held from Cordova until King Ferdinand and Queen Isabel took their Granada stronghold in 1492—the very year when Cristofo Colombo opened up a New World of conquest and slavery in the Americas.

During the Moor Wars, Henry the Navigator (1394-1460) with his brother Ferdinand had invaded Tangiers. Defeated, Ferdinand was taken hostage. He died in prison.

Perhaps the experience led Prince Henry to bitterness. For the Portuguese sent trade missions along the African coast, many of which carried to it Franciscan and Augustinian missionaries.

But soon return passengers were not so willing. The cargo turned human gold, as Prince Henry kicked off the capitalism of Black African slavery. Portugal began granting asientos, business licenses, for the slave trade.

Notwithstanding the African heresies Arianism, Pelaganism, the Donatists, and the barbaric Crusaders who attacked and pillaged old African churches as if they were not Christian (they were)—with this final straw--the African Church was all but destroyed—until now.

FATHER MELVIN DOUCETTE

"All prophets are to live a good and moral life"

Thursday, February 05, 2009

Dear Friends,

Jesus said, Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but underneath are ravenous wolves. By their fruits you will know them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Just so, every good tree bears good fruit, and a rotten tree bears bad fruit.

A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a rotten tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. So by their fruits you will know them. Matthew 7:15 20

I present you with another message from Our Lord and Savior given to Joseph. Jesus spoke to him in these words, Let it be known that prophecy is a gift from the Father and He gives it to whomever He chooses.

These chosen people are given messages for the people and these words come either from the Father, from Me, My Mother, an angel or a saint. It is through the power of the Holy Spirit that all this takes place. You know the messages are true if they do not contradict the Holy Bible or the teachings of the Church.

If a prophet should announce to you the date of My second coming, you will know that it is a false teaching because I expressly told the Apostles and it is written in the Bible that nobody knows the day nor the hour of the return of the Son of Man. Today many are giving the year and even the month of My return but all this is false. Do not believe it.

If you should find a person, who is living with a partner and they are not married and he or she maintains to be a prophet, that so-called prophet is a false one. He or she is not living according to the commandments. All prophets are to live a good and moral life. So by their fruits you will know them. The prophet will be a person of prayer who wants to be My follower.

You are called to accept the messages of true prophets as they bring you a message that is important for you. Do not discard these messages for they will bring you closer to Me and help you live a holy life. A good example of a prophet is St. Faustina who brought a great message to the world about My mercy. Today many people have been drawn to Me because of these messages of mine addressed to her. These show My love for you.?

Medjugorje Day By Day Feb 05 - CHARITY CANNOT REPLACE FASTING

After our affections have been moved in prayer, we need not multiply considerations, but stop a little and dwell upon those already made; then from time to time, say to Our Lord some word of compunction, love or resignation, according as we feel ourselves inclined. This is the best kind of prayer. -- St. Jane Frances de Chantal (BC Catholic)

"All the sacraments, O Jesus, and especially this sacrament of the Eucharist, flow forth from your loving heart. I wish I could give you as much honor and glory as you give your Father in this divine mystery. I know you love me now with the same degree of love that compelled you to die on the cross for me.
Divine Heart, introduce yourself to those who do not know you.... I adore
you, I thank you, I love you, with every soul who loves you at this moment." (St. Alphonsus Liguori)

Mother Teresa -
Real prayer is union with God, a union as vital as that of the vine and the branches, which is the illustration Jesus gives us in the Gospel of John.
We need prayer.
We need that union to produce good fruit.

Meditations by Padre Pio -
One searches for God in books.
One finds Him in meditation.

Archbishop Fulton Sheen -
Tears of salvation!
"Even in their early failures, the parents are not to be discouraged, remembering that fifteen centuries ago when the heart of a mother was broken for her wanton boy, St. Ambrose said to her: `Fear not, Monica; the child of so many tears cannot perish.' That vain and wanton boy grew up to be the great and learned St. Augustine, whose Confessions everyone ought to read before he dies."

St. Faustina's diary
Jesus told me that I please Him best by meditating on His sorrowful Passion, and by such meditation much light falls upon my soul. He who wants to learn true humility should reflect upon the Passion of Jesus. When I meditate upon the Passion of Jesus, I get a clear understanding of many things I could not comprehend before.

I want to resemble You, O Jesus,-You crucified, tortured, and humiliated. Jesus, imprint upon my heart and soul Your own humility. I love You, Jesus, to the point of madness, You who were crushed with suffering as described by the prophet [cf. Isaiah 53:2-9], as if he could not see the human form in You because of Your great suffering. It is in this condition, Jesus, that I love You to the point of madness. O eternal and infinite God, what has love done to You?... (267)

When Jesus ravished me by His beauty and drew me to Himself, I then saw what in my soul was displeasing to Him and made up my mind to remove it, cost what it may; and aided by the grace of God I did remove it at once. This magnanimity pleased the Lord, and from that moment God started granting me higher graces. In my interior life I never reason; I do not analyze the ways in which God's Spirit leads me. It is enough for me to know that I am loved and that I love. Pure love enables me to know God and understand many mysteries. (293)

MEDJUGORJE DAY BY DAY

These thoughts for a day are taken from a daily meditation book based on the Messages of Our Lady of Medjugorje by Father Richard J. Beyer, Ave Maria Press.

Feb 5 - CHARITY CANNOT REPLACE FASTING

Our Lady speaks of something very important to her:
"The best fast is on bread and water. Through fasting and prayer, one can stop wars, one can suspend the laws of nature. Charity cannot replace fasting. Those who are not able to fast can sometimes replace it with prayer, charity, and a confession; but everyone, except the sick, must fast. (First Years Message July 21,1982)

In Matthew's gospel, Jesus answers a question on fasting: Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?" And Jesus said to them, "The wedding guests cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they? But the days will come when the bridegroom will no longer be with them, and then they will fast" (Mt 9:14-15)

Reflection:
As we await the second coming of the bridegroom, we are now in that perilous time when it is proper to fast. Since the seers of Medjugorje have been advised on fasting by Our Lady, it would be wise to hear their views.
When asked the purpose of fasting, Vicka responded:

"Through fasting we purify our hearts. In order to have a pure heart, we need the grace that comes from fasting. And when we totally cleanse our hearts, we are able to realize the Blessed Mother's plan, and what she is expecting from us.
Concerning problems we may encounter in fasting, Vicka advises:

The first time is always the most difficult. When we try to fast, Satan tries hard to distract us, to make us think, "Well, I could eat a little something extra." We have to pray hard this first time, really hard. When we pray and when we fast, Satan can do nothing to us. The second time will be easier, and the third time even easier. Then it will become natural.

Application:
Make a commitment in prayer to fast this Friday. If it is your first time, be sure to set aside extra time for prayer to ward off diversions by the Evil One.

From the Diary of St. Faustina to save our country

TO SAVE OUR COUNTRY:

FROM DIVINE MERCY IN MY SOUL - THE DIARY OF ST. FAUSTINA

Paragraph 39, page 20

" + One day Jesus told me that He would cause a chastisement to fall upon the most beautiful city in our country [probably Warsaw]. This chastisement would be that with which God had punished Sodom and Gomorrah. I saw the great wrath of God and a shudder pierced my heart. I prayed in silence.

After a moment, Jesus said to me, My child, unite yourself closely to Me during the Sacrifice and offer My Blood and My Wounds to My Father in expiation for the sins of that city. Repeat this without interruption throughout the entire Holy Mass. Do this for seven days.

On the seventh day I saw Jesus in a bright cloud and began to beg Him to look upon the city and upon our whole country. Jesus looked [down] graciously. When I saw the kindness of Jesus, I began to beg His blessing. Immediately Jesus said, For your sake I bless the entire country. And He made a big sign of the cross over our country. Seeing the goodness of God, a great joy filled my soul."

Also, our prayer group prays a Chaplet of Divine Mercy for our country with the following modification:

"L - For the sake of His sorrowful passion

R - Have Mercy on our country and on the whole world."

God Bless - MT
