BLACK SAINTS OF THE DAY

Anba Lucius (Abeluzius) I am a friend of God in the Ethiopian Rite, 15 Jan.

Anba Shenouda

Andrew of Kemet (Egypt) (4th century), Dec. 2

Andrew of Syracuse, martyred in Africa. Sept. 23

Andrew the Hermit of Kemet (Egypt) June 12

Andronicus and His Wife of Kemet (Egypt) Oct. 9

Andronicus, at Canopus in Kemet, 2 March

Anesius, Theodulas, Valeria, Felix, Cornelius, and companions. We were martyred in the north and west of Africa, 31 March.

Anianus of Alexandria, Bishop, second bishop of Alexandria. As soon Mark, the Evangelist entered the city gates of Alexandria, his sandal rap broke. He took it to this shoemaker, Anianus, who became Mark’s first Alexandria convert.

After authorities martyred Mark during the reign Emperor Trajan’s reign (or the "eighth year of Nero”), Anianus succeeded him as second bishop of Alexandria. 25 April

Anihan (Moses the Black). I am also known as Moses the Ethiopian. Born 330 A.D.enslaved, but did not take too kindly to my unnatural condition. A Kemetian official called himself my owner.

I became a thief. The owner cast me from his household. I joined a gang of fellow robbers. Once, while being pursued for my acts, I sought sanctuary with monastery hermits at Petra, in the Scete desert.
The grace of God converted me. I became a monk, and then was ordained a priest. God gave me the grace of supernatural gifts.

I became a pacifist. Later, the monastery was attacked. I did not defend myself, though I could have done so. Martyred Berbers or Bedouins. 405 A.D. at Petra, Skete, Khemet. The Church of Al Adra (the Virgin) contains my remains. 28 Aug.

Medjugorje Day By Day Aug 27 - ST. MONICA

Message of August 25, 2004

"Dear children! I call you all to conversion of heart. Decide, as in the first days of my coming here, for a complete change of your life. In this way, little children, you will have the strength to kneel and to open your hearts before God.V God will hear your prayers and answer them. Before God, I intercede for each of you. Thank you for having responded to my call."

"We do not sin when we adore Christ in the Eucharist; we do sin when we do not adore Christ in the Eucharist." (St. Augustine)

Mother Teresa -
Total surrender consists in giving ourselves completely to God. We must give ourselves fully to God because God has given Himself fully to us. If God owes nothing to us and is ready to impart to us no less than Himself, shall we answer with just a fraction of ourselves?

Meditations by Padre Pio - In order to reach our final goal, we must follow our Divine Leader who usually leads chosen Souls by the path He Himself has trodden and by no other; by the path, I tell you, of self-denial and suffering.

Archbishop Fulton Sheen -

Making truth personal through solitude with God
"Only in solitariness is true spirituality born, when the soul stands naked before its God. In that moment these are the only two realities in the universe. In this discovery is born love of neighbor, for then we love our fellow human beings, not because of what they can do for us, but because we see that they too are real or potential children of God. Though truth is not personal, we make it personal by contemplation."
We must passionately guard our passions!

"Listening to a political figure give a television report in the nation on a world crisis with somewhat the same passion that he would read off the price of cheese in Switzerland and Burma makes one wonder if there is any fire or enthusiasm left for great causes. Obviously, enthusiasm has something to do with passion.

But that word generally evokes two kinds of extreme and wrong reactions: one view is that passion is something we ought to be ashamed of; the other is that passion is always right, and that if we do not give way to its demands, we hurt our personality."

St. Faustina's diary http://www.marian.org/directory_flash.html -

This deeper knowledge of God gives me full liberty and spiritual freedom, and nothing can disturb my close union with Him, not even the angelic powers. I feel that I am great when I am united to God. What happiness it is to have the consciousness of God in one's heart and to live in close intimacy with Him. (1135)

In the evening, He gave me to understand how fleeting all earthly things are, and [how] everything that appears great disappears like smoke, and does not give the soul freedom, but weariness.

Happy the soul that understands these things and with only one foot touches the earth. My repose is to be united with You; everything else tires me. Oh, how much I feel I am in exile! I see that no one understands my interior life. You alone understand me, You who are hidden in my heart and yet are eternally alive. (1141)

Today, my soul entered into close union with the Lord. He made known to me how I should always abandon myself to His holy will: In one moment, I can give you more than you are able to desire. (1169)

Quote of the Day - Son, nothing in this world now affords me delight. I do not know what there is now for me to do or why I am still here, all my hopes in this world being now fulfilled. -St. Monica about the conversion of Augustine

Today's Tidbit - On Sundays and certain feasts throughout the year pastors are required to offer the Mass for the faithful entrusted to their care. This Is often called Mass for the people or "Pro Populo."

AUGUST 27 - ST. MONICA

Today the Blessed Mother speaks of faith as the foundation of our lives:

From the very beginning I have been conveying the messages of God to the world. It is a great pity not to believe it. Faith is essential, but one cannot compel a person to believe. Faith is the foundation from which everything else flows (First Years December 31, 1981).

In his letter to the Hebrews, Paul defines faith:

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval. By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible (Heb 11:1-3).

Reflection:
Today we honor one of the great women of faith, St. Monica, the patroness of Christian mothers. Born in 331, she married and had children, one of whom was Augustine.

She poured forth many tears and prayers for his conversion, which she witnessed in her lifetime. He later went on to become a priest, bishop, and one of the church's greatest theologians. It is appropriate that our readings today deal with faith, for this was the foundation of Monica's life and her legacy to her children.

Application:
Faith is a gift. Today, pray in thanksgiving for this most precious of gifts, and ask the Lord to deepen it.

MOTHER MARYAM’S MEDJUGORGE Message of August 25, 2008

"Dear children! Also today I call you to personal conversion. You be those who will convert and, with your life, will witness, love, forgive and bring the joy of the Risen One into this world, where my Son died and where people do not feel a need to seek Him and to discover Him in their lives.

You adore Him, and may your hope be hope to those hearts who do not have Jesus. Thank you for having responded to my call."

Medjugorje Day By Day Aug 25 - ST. JOSEPH CALASANCTIUS

"Love the Immaculate with all your heart, fly often to Her by means of
ejaculations, or simply with the thought of Her, and She will teach you how
to return to Jesus a love without measure for the love which He showed on the Cross and in the most Blessed Sacrament of the altar." (St. Maximilian Kolbe)

Mother Teresa -
There is no limit to God's love. It is without measure and its depth cannot be sounded.v

Meditations by Padre Pio - My children, we can never prepare ourselves too much for Communion

Archbishop Fulton Sheen -
Honesty and innocence are lost too soon in growing out of childhood

"In regards insincerity, children do not have this duplicity because they are natural and it is acquired. If their mother tells them to tell a stranger at the door that she is not at home, they will invariably say, `My mother told me to tell you that she is not at home.'

I know of a mother who, after an introduction to several ladies who had dropped in for tea, asked her child, `Now which one did I say was my best friend?' The child in the presence of all answered, `The one with the big teeth.' It takes some falling away from the childlike simplicity that purchases Heaven, before one develops the film of dishonesty."

St. Faustina's diary http://www.marian.org/directory_flash.html -

Today, the Majesty of God enveloped and transpierced my soul to its very depths. The greatness of God is pervading my being and flooding me so that I am completely drowning in His greatness. I am dissolving and disappearing entirely in Him as in my life-source, as in perfect life. (983)

My Lord and my God, You know that it is You alone whom my soul has come to love. My soul is entirely drowned in You, O Lord. Even if I did not accomplish any of the things that You have made known to me, O Lord, I would be completely at peace because I would have done what I could. (989)

This evening, when I heard the hymn, "Good night, Holy Head of my Jesus," on the radio, my spirit was suddenly swept away to God's mysterious bosom, and I knew in what the greatness of a soul consists and what matters to God: love, love, and once again, love.

And I understood how all that exists is saturated with God, and such a love of God inundated my soul that I am at a loss to describe it. Happy the soul that knows how to love unreservedly, for in this lies its greatness. (997)

Aug 25

Quote of the Day - In order to avoid discord, never contradict anyone except in case of sin or some danger to a neighbor; and when necessary to contradict others, do it with tact and not with temper. -St. Louis IX

Today's Tidbit - The Piarists were formed in 1597 and are still dedicated to offering free education to the poor, especially children. The order has more than 1400 members and operate schools and colleges throughout Europe

MEDJUGORJE DAY BY DAY

These thoughts for a day are taken from a daily meditation book based on the Messages of Our Lady of Medjugorje by Father Richard J. Beyer, Ave Maria Press.

AUGUST 25 - ST. JOSEPH CALASANCTIUS

We are called to evangelize through the Madonna's words and miracles at Medjugorje:

I am anxious for people to know what is happening in Medjugorje. Speak about it so that everyone will be converted (Special Message 1985).

And in Matthew's gospel, the risen Christ also gives his disciples a special charge:

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you (Mt. 28:19-20).

Reflection:

St .John Calasanctius took this commission of Christ to heart in his evangelization and teaching of the young.

Born in 1557, he was ordained a priest and later dedicated himself to caring for poor children, founding a religious order pledged to that work. "This ministry," he once wrote, "is directed to the well-being of body and soul. At the same time that it shapes behavior, it also fosters devotion and Christian doctrine."

Application:

Deeply devoted to the Blessed Virgin, St. Joseph Calasanctius wrote this Trinitarian Prayer of Praise to Mary. Let us offer it now for all children that live in poverty:

Let us offer praise and thanksgiving to the Most Holy

Trinity who has shown us the Virgin Mary,

Clothed with the sun, the moon beneath her feet, and on her head a mystic crown of 12 stars.

Let us praise and thank the divine Father who elected her for His daughters. Our Father.v
Praised be the divine Father who predestined her to be the Mother of his divine Son. Hail Mary.

Praised be the divine Father who preserved her from all stain in her conception. Hail Mary.

Praised be the divine Father who adorned her at her birth with his most beautiful gifts. Hail Mary.

Praised be the divine Father who gave her St. Joseph to be her companion and chaste spouse. Hail Mary. Glory be..

Let us praise and thank the divine Son who chose her for his Mother.

Our Father.

Praised be the divine Son who became incarnate in her bosom and there abode for 9 months. Hail Mary.

Praised be the divine Son who was born of her and was nourished by her. Hail Mary..
Praised be the divine Son who in his childhood was taught by her.

Hail Mary.

Praised be the divine Son who revealed to her the mystery of the redemption of the world. Hail Mary. Glory be.

Let us praise and thank the Holy Spirit who took her for his spouse.

Our Father.

Praised to the Holy Spirit who took her for his spouse. Our Father.

Praised to the Holy Spirit who revealed first to her his name of Holy Spirit. Hail Mary.

Praised to the Holy Spirit by whose miracle she was at once Virgin and Mother. Hail Mary.

Praised to the Holy Spirit by whose power she was the living temple of the ever blessed Trinity. Hail Mary.

Praised to the Holy Spirit by whom she was exalted in heaven above every living creature. Hail Mary. Glory Be.

Medjugorje Day By Day Aug 26 - FASTING WITH THE HEART

Message of August 25, 2007 "Dear children! Also today I call you to conversion. May your life, little children, be a reflection of God's goodness and not of hatred and unfaithfulness. Pray, little children, that prayer may become life for you. In this way, in your life you will discover the peace and joy which God gives to those who have an open heart to His love.

And you who are far from Gods mercy, convert so that God may not become deaf to your prayers and that it may not be too late for you. Therefore, in this time of grace, convert and put
God in the first place in your life. Thank you for having responded to my call."

"For on that day when her death was so close, she was not concerned that her body should be sumptuously wrapped or embalmed with spices, nor with any thought of choosing a monument or even for burial in her own country.

Of such things she gave us no command, but only desired to be remembered at Thy altar, which she had served without ever missing so much as a day, on which she knew that the Holy Victim was offered, by whom the handwriting is blotted out of the decree that was contrary to us, by which offering too the enemy was overcome who, reckoning our sins and seeking what may be laid to our charge, found nothing in Him, in Whom we are conquerors.

Who shall restore to Him His innocent blood? Who shall give Him back the price by which He purchased us and so take us from Him? To this sacrament of our redemption
Thy handmaid had bound her soul by the bond of faith." (St. Augustine, writing of his mother St. Monica)

Mother Teresa -
I for God and God for me. I live for God and give up my own self, and in this way God lives for me.

Meditations by Padre Pio - If you succeed in over coming temptations it has the effect of soap on dirty linen (AdFA, 158).

Archbishop Fulton Sheen -
The less said the better sometimes!

"There are moments when it is very difficult to express one's views, for example, when a husband is asked how he likes his wife's new hat, or how he likes her new Italian haircut - which to him resembles unstrung spaghetti.

Women, when faced with something they do not like, generally go into ecstasies of praise in order to cover up their real mind. Men generally descend to monosyllables or a long grunt.

When a man gets mad at his wife at cards he generally calls her `dear' but with such a coolness as to make her think she is a `Frigidear'. Tact, in such difficult moments, does not mean lying, nor smoothness at the expense of truth, but it does mean circumspection."

St. Faustina's diary http://www.marian.org/directory_flash.html -

At eleven o'clock Jesus said to me, My host, you are refreshment for My tormented Heart. I thought, after these words, that my heart would burn up. And He brought me into such close intimacy with Himself that my heart was espoused to His Heart in a loving union, and I could feel the faintest stir of His Heart and He, of mine.

The fire of my created love was joined to the ardor of His eternal love. This one grace surpasses all others in its immensity. His Trinitarian Being enveloped me entirely, and I am totally immersed in Him.

My littleness is, as it were, wrestling with this Immortal Mighty One. I am immersed in incomprehensible love and incomprehensible torture because of His Passion. All that concerns His Being is imparted to me also. (1056)

Up to now, Jesus has been bringing me to know about, and to have a presentiment of, this grace, but today He granted it to me. I would not even dare to dream about it.

My heart is in ceaseless ecstasy, as it were, although outwardly nothing disturbs my contacts with my neighbor or my attending to various matters. Nothing is capable of interrupting my ecstasy, nor can anyone suspect it, because I have asked God to protect me from detection by people.

And, together with this grace, there entered my soul a whole ocean of light, enabling me to understand God and myself. Amazement overwhelms me entirely and leads me as if into a new ecstasy [aroused by the fact] that God has deigned to descend to me, who am so little. (1057)

Aug 26 - http://www.catholic-forum.com/e-pistle.html

Quote of the Day - Remember that the Christian life is one of action; not of speech and daydreams. Let there be few words and many deeds, and let them be done will. -St. Vincent Pallotti

Today's Tidbit - Icons are Byzantine-style paintings or representation of Christ, the Blessed Mother and other saints. Icons are a dominant religious artistic form in Eastern Churches. Icons often take the places of statutes when they are used.

MEDJUGORJE DAY BY DAY

These thoughts for a day are taken from a daily meditation book based on the Messages of Our Lady of Medjugorje by Father Richard J. Beyer, Ave Maria Press.

-
AUGUST 26 - FASTING WITH THE HEART

Today Our Lady speaks of fasting "with the heart":

Dear children, today I call you to begin fasting with the heart. There are many people who fast only because everyone else is fasting. It has become an empty practice. And so I ask the parish to fast out of gratitude to God for allowing me to remain so long with you. Dear children, fast and pray with the heart (Weekly Message September 20, 1984).

In Luke's gospel, Jesus fasts in the wilderness:

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the Devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished (Lk 4:1-2).

Reflection:

At times, Our Lady of Medjugorje speaks of "fasting with the heart," a term meaning, first of all, accepting the invitation to fast with confidence in God, who will bring forth beautiful fruits from our efforts.

Second, it means to anticipate and welcome the spiritual dynamic that will begin to reshape our lives; this includes a deeper sense of repentance, a joyous realization of God's forgiveness, and a growing love, faith and hope.

Fasting with the heart also means experiencing a new freedom from material things, for we will begin to see the essential in life and not be mired in the superfluous. It means growing in a profound love for God and neighbor, a deepening joy in Christ, and new eyes to see as the Lord sees. Ultimately, to fast with the heart is a gift of grace, not a penance, from the heavenly Father.

Application:
Can you identify any changes that have happened to you since you began fasting? What changes would you like to see?

DAILY OFFERING PRAYER - O Jesus, through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer You my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world. I offer them for all the intentions of Your Sacred Heart: the salvation of souls, reparation for sin, and the reunion of all Christians. I offer them for the intentions of our bishops and of all Apostles of Prayer, and in particular for those recommended by our Holy Father this month.
