Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary Protectress of Africa

Holy Mary, Mother of God, Protectress of Africa, you have given to the world the true Light, Jesus Christ. Through your obedience to the Father and the grace of the Holy Spirit, you have given us the source of our reconciliation and our justice, Jesus Christ, our peace and our joy.

Mother of Tenderness and Wisdom, show us Jesus, your Son and the Son of God. Guide our path of conversion, so that Jesus might shine his glory on us in every aspect of our personal, familial and social lives.

Mother, full of Mercy and Justice, through your docility to the Spirit, the Counselor, obtain for us the grace to be witnesses of the Risen Lord, so that we will increasingly become the salt of the earth and the light of the world.

Mother of Perpetual Help, we entrust to your maternal intercession the preparation and fruits of the Second Special Assembly for Africa. Queen of Peace, pray for us! Our Lady of Africa, pray for us!

AFROCENTRIC JOYFUL MYSTERIES ROSARY, CHAPLET DIVINE MERCY, DIVINE OFFICE

Medjugorje Day By Day June 19 - LET PEACE RULE

"This Sacrament being a mystery of faith, we must believe firmly that Jesus Christ is really present in the Holy Eucharist, and that He is living and glorious there as in heaven" (St. John Vianney).

Mother Teresa And the only way you can get through is knowing through prayer and reflection that God is with you through it all. "Jesus I trust in you."

Meditations by Padre Pio -
My children, we can never prepare ourselves too much for Holy Communion (AP).

Archbishop Fulton Sheen

They misunderstood the King in their midst

"Jesus fed bread to the multitudes in the desert. Having fed the hungry masses, they `sought to make Him king' (John 6: 15). It is ever in the human heart, when it loses its love of the spiritual, to worship those who promise full stomachs or economic power.

They wished to make Jesus king in opposition to all the kings of the earth; instead of surrendering themselves to Him and His sublime doctrine about sin and redemption, they willed to have Him submit to them. They did not want to be drawn up to Him, but to draw Him down to them. However sincere and enthusiastic they were, they were, nevertheless, bent on pulling Divinity down to the level of the human."

St. Faustina's diary http://www.marian.org/directory_flash.html -
O most sweet Jesus, who have deigned to allow miserable me to gain a knowledge of Your unfathomable mercy; O most sweet Jesus, who have graciously demanded that I tell the whole world of Your incomprehensible mercy, this day I take into my hands the two rays that spring from Your merciful Heart; that is, the Blood and the Water; and I scatter them all over the globe so that each soul may receive Your mercy and, having received it, may glorify it for endless ages. O most sweet Jesus who, in Your incomprehensible kindness, has deigned to unite my wretched heart to Your most merciful Heart, it is with Your own Heart that I glorify God, our Father, as no soul has ever glorified Him before. (836)

MEDJUGORJE DAY BY DAY

These thoughts for a day are taken from a daily meditation book based on the Messages of Our Lady of Medjugorje by Father Richard J. Beyer, Ave Maria Press.

JUNE 19 - LET PEACE RULE

The Blessed Mother speaks of peace today:

Dear children, today I invite you to peace. As the Queen of Peace I have come to deepen within you my motherly peace. Dear children, I love you and I wish that all of you experience God's peace which enriches every heart. I invite you to become carriers and witnesses of my peace to this unpeaceful world. Let peace rule over all the earth, which is devoid of peace and yet longs for it. I bless you with a mother's blessing (Monthly Message July 25, 1990),

St. Peter also urges us to seek peace:

Those who desire life and desire to see good days, let them keep their tongues from evil and their lips form speaking deceit; let them turn away from evil and do good; let them seek peace and pursue it (1 Pt 3:10-11).

Reflection:

To be truly at peace we must put our lives and talents to use in serving God and our neighbor in the service of love. The prizes that the world values money, fame, or pleasure never truly satisfy. God never allows even one human being whom he has created to be content with anything short of himself.

As St. Augustine wrote, "Our hearts are restless until they rest in thee." And so Our Lady reminds us that peace is a gift" which only God gives and which enriches every heart." This is the peace that comes from purpose in our lives, from loving and serving God and neighbor.

Application:

Today, pray that through your life, talents, and prayers, you may become, as Our Lady says, "a carrier and witness of my peace to this unpeaceful world.

Medjugorje Day By Day June 18 - NOW IS THE TIME

"O wealth of the poor, how admirably You know how to sustain souls! And
without their seeing such great wealth, You show it to them little by little.
When I behold majesty as extraordinary as this concealed in something as small as the Host, it happens afterward that I marvel at wisdom so wonderful, and I
fail to know how the Lord gives me courage or strength to approach Him. If He
who has granted, and still does grant me so many favors, did not give this
strength, it would be impossible to conceal the fact or resist shouting aloud
marvels so great" (St. Teresa of Avila).

Mother Teresa -
Be happy in the moment, that's enough. Each moment is all we need, not more. Be happy now and if you show through your actions that you love others, including those who are poorer than you, you'll give them happiness, too. It doesn't take much - it can be just giving a smile. The world would be a much better place if everyone smiled more. So smile, be cheerful, be joyous that God loves you

Meditations by Padre Pio -
My Jesus, my sweetness, how can I live without You? Come always, My Jesus, come; You alone take possession of my heart (AD,54).

Archbishop Fulton Sheen -
If you want freedom, exercise your free will as God wills

"People talk most about their health when they are sick, and most about liberty when they are in danger of losing it. Despite all the pleas for liberty, it must be remembered that every flight from responsibility is a flight from liberty and every denial of personal guilt is also a denial of freedom."

No matter what excuses, we didn't just fall off the cabbage truck!

"Cabbages cannot do wrong, though they have heads; calculators cannot commit sin, though they can do many things which seem to emulate human thought. Perhaps it is the very burden of responsibility which flows from free choice that makes so many human beings ready to surrender their great gift of freedom.

This also explains the search for someone to whom they can commit their choice, who do their thinking for them and relieve them of the awful burden of the consequences of their free decisions. This search for someone to whom neurotic minds can commit themselves explains the comparatively facile surrender of so many to totalitarianism in our day and age."

MEDJUGORJE DAY BY DAY

JUNE 18 - NOW IS THE TIME

The following was given to the locutionist Marijana:

My angel, pray for unbelievers. People will tear their hair, brother will plead with brother, they will curse their past lives lived without God. They will repent, but it will be too late. Now is the time for conversion. I have been calling you for the past four years. Pray for them. Invite everyone to pray the rosary (Special Message August 15, 1985).

IN equally strong language, Jesus urges readiness for his second coming:

For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son Of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. Then two will be in the field; one will be left. Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left. Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming (Mt 24:37-42).

Reflection:

"Now is the time of conversion," the Madonna says today, echoing the words of Jesus in the gospels. Of course the bet reason for converting or deepening our faith is out of love for God, but some may need the impetus of the warnings of Christ and his Mother today. How one comes to faith is as unique as each individual.

The British educator F. H, Drinkwater tells the story of Ira Dutton, born on a farm in Vermont, a teen-age dropout from school, and an enlistee in the northern army when the Civil War broke out. Eventually promoted to officer's rank, he was twenty-two when the war ended.

From there he began the tragic downward spiral of alcoholism. For years he led a kind of double life, sober in the daytime, but drunk and carousing at night, until that time when the disease entered its final, terminal stage. At this juncture he experienced through the grace of God, a life-changing conversion and a miraculous healing of his alcoholism.

At the age of forty, he was received into the Catholic Church and changed his first name to Joseph. Two years later he read about Fr. Damien and determined to go and help him with the lepers. When he met Damien on the beach of Molokai in 1886, he told him he wanted no special treatment: "I wish only to serve my fellow man." Fr. Damien already had leprosy, and in another few moments was dead. Brother Joseph lived for another forty years on Nolokai, devoting himself to the care of lepers until his own death in 1926.

Application:

In prayer today, abandon yourself again to Our Lady, asking for the grace of deep conversion.

Medjugorje Day BY Day June 17 - MANY ARE SEEKING MONEY

"[Jesus in the Holy Eucharist] asks my for nothing but love . . . . He is so
much in love with my heart that He makes me burn with His divine fire, with
the fire of His love . . . . I often ask myself if any people exist who do not
feel their breast burning with divine fire, especially when they are close to
Him in the Blessed Sacrament" (St. Padre Pio).

Mother Teresa

Everything is God's to give and to take away, so share what you've been given, and that includes yourself.

Meditations by Padre Pio -
The Heart of our divine Master has no law more loveable than that of gentleness, humility and charity (CE,11).

Archbishop Fulton Sheen

Promises of materials turns into imprisonment of self

"Communism swept one-third of the world into the grasp of the Iron Bear simple because it promised pie in the sky after hatred had overthrown the existing order. The great fallacy of all revolutionary movements is that the value of great lives is nullified, either through persecution or character assassination, in the interests of fallacious promises and illusory hopes. Our world is slow to learn that those who turn out the lights of Heaven, bay that very act turn out the lights earth. Influences are born of moral stamina but promises, like spider webs, are woven from the bellies of materialism."

St. Faustina's diary http://www.marian.org/directory_flash.html -

During Holy Mass, I was so enveloped in the great interior fire of God's love and the desire to save souls that I do not know how to express it. I feel I am all aflame. I shall fight all evil with the weapon of mercy. I am being burned up by the desire to save souls. I traverse the world's length and breadth and venture as far as its ultimate limits and its wildest lands to save souls. I do this through prayer and sacrifice. I want every soul to glorify the mercy of God, for each one experiences the effects of that mercy on himself. The Saints in heaven worship the mercy of the Lord. I want to worship it even now, here on earth, and to spread devotion to it in the way that God demands of me.... (745)

The mercy of the Lord is praised by the holy souls in heaven who have themselves experienced that infinite mercy. What these souls do in heaven, I already will begin to do here on earth. I will praise God for His infinite goodness, and I will strive to bring other souls to know and glorify the inexpressible and incomprehensible mercy of God. (753)

MEDJUGORJE DAY BY DAY

JUNE 17 - MANY ARE SEEKING MONEY

The Gospa expresses a special concern to Mirjana:

Right now many are greatly seeking money not only in the parish, but throughout the world. Woe to those who seek to exploit those who are coming here, and blessed are those who have been exploited (Special Message March 18, 1985).

And in Mark's gospel, Jesus encounters a rich young man:

Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, "You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me." When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!" (Mk 10:21-23).

Reflection:

There was a barrier keeping the young man out of the kingdom: his love of money. Perhaps it represented his self-respect, accomplishments, or family name. Whatever the reason, money had become his first priority.

Why did Jesus feel it was hard for the rich to enter heaven? Perhaps because the wealthy have most of their basic physical needs met, and thus often become self-reliant rather than reliant of God. Perhaps Jesus knew that money can be a salve to dull the pain that was meant to draw them to God. Ironically, in their wealth, the rich can suffer the truest poverty, the absence of God in their lives.

Christ explained that in the world to come, the values of this world will be reversed. Those who seek status and importance here will have none in heaven, and vice versa. It is important, then, to begin to live heaven's values while still on earth.

Application:

In prayer today give Our Lady your money and possessions, asking her to help you use them unselfishly and wisely.

Medjugorje Day By Day June 16 - THE MASS

St. Anthony of Padua, Doctor of the Church, Italy (1195-1231)

"Anthony was a friend of St. Francis and became a Franciscan priest. He was a great preacher on the Real Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and told everyone he met about his love for Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. St. Anthony was also known as a great miracle worker who loved the poor and sick people very much. Wherever he went, St. Anthony performed many miracles to help feed the poor, heal the sick, and care for the needy. He is known as a great Doctor of the Church, patron of the poor, and finder of the lost" (Adoration for Children).

June 14, 2004

"When the conquest for the Immaculate [Mary] of the whole world and of every single soul now living or to live until the end of the world, and through Her for the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is completed, . . . then souls will love the Sacred Heart as they have never as yet loved Him, because like Her they will have been immersed as never before in the mystery of love, the Cross, the Eucharist" (St. Maximilian Kolbe).

Mother Teresa

Many people think that having money makes you happy. I think it must be harder to be happy if you are wealthy because you may find it difficult to see God; you'll have too many other things to think about. However, if God has given you this gift of wealth, then use it for His purpose - help others, help the poor, create jobs, give work to others. Don't waste your wealth. Having food, a home, dignity, freedom, health and an education are all of God's gifts too, which is why we must help those who are less fortunate than ourselves.

Meditations by Padre Pio -
During the rioting of the passions and adverse events, keep in mind the dear hope of His unlimited mercy. Let us run with confidence to the tribunal of penance, where He waits for you at all times with the anxiety of a father; and although we are conscious of our debt towards Him, let us not doubt the solemn pardon of our sins. Let us bury them as our Lord has done (CE,18).

Archbishop Fulton Sheen

Those who trust in God will avoid the venom of the serpent

"The unfortunate characteristics of our day is that propaganda has taken the place of personal influence. Politics has become so primary in modern life, that the masses are more moved by promises than by fulfillments."

St. Faustina's diary http://www.marian.org/directory_flash.html -
Eternal Truth, give me a ray of Your light that I may come to know You, O Lord, and worthily glorify Your infinite mercy. And at the same time, grant me to know myself, the whole abyss of misery that I am. (727)

During the meditation on creation... at a certain point, my soul became closely united to its Lord and Creator. In this union, I recognized the purpose and destiny of my life. My purpose is to become closely united to God through love, and my destiny is to praise and glorify God's mercy. The Lord has allowed me to know and experience this in a distinct and even physical way. I become lost in admiration when I recognize and experience this incomprehensible love of God with which God loves me.

Who is God - and what am I? I cannot meditate on this any further. Only love can understand this meeting of two spirits, namely, God-who-is-Spirit and the soul-who-is-creature. The more I know Him, the more completely with all the strength of my being I drown in Him. (729)

JUNE 16 - THE MASS

Of the Mass, Our Lady says:

Dear children, I am calling you to more attentive prayer and to greater participation in the Mass. I wish your Mass to be an experience of God (Weekly Message May 16, 1985).

Jesus also speaks of the Eucharist, the living bread:

I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down form heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh (Jan 6:48-51).

Reflection:

Stories continue to come out of China, from time to time, of the heroic efforts of the few remaining bishops and priests to keep the faith alive and nourish the underground church. One such story tells of a priest who lives and works as a coolie. By means of prearranged sign language, he gets messages around of where he is to be found usually at the corner of a local market selling soap. Customers who, like the early Christians, give a secret sign, are given a piece of soap, between the wrappings of which is hidden a small consecrated host.

The Chinese Catholic takes his purchase home and usually, after a short family service, receives communion. Clearly the most exalted gift of Christ is his very body and blood in the Eucharist. St. Ambrose wrote of the miracle: "Christ is food for me; Christ is drink for me; the flesh of God is food for me, the blood of God is drink for me. Christ is ministered to me daily."

Application:

For reflection today: Do you prepare for the Mass? Do you participate in the responses and singing? Do you spend a few minutes in thanksgiving afterwards? How can you enter more deeply into the Eucharist?

Medjugorje Day By Day June 15 - DRAW EVER CLOSER TO THE FATHER

"The Lord calls us friends, he makes us his friends, he entrusts himself to us, he entrusts to us his Body in the Eucharist, he entrusts to us his Church. Therefore, we must be true friends to him, we must have the same perception as he has, we must want what he wants and not what he does not want. Jesus himself tells us: 'You are my friends if you do what I command you' (John 15:14).

Let this be our common resolution: all of us together, to do his holy will, in which lies our freedom and our joy" Pope Benedict XVI, May 13, 2005

"I bow down before You, O Bread of Angels,
With deep faith, hope and love
And from the depths of my soul I worship You"
St. Maria Faustina of the Blessed Sacrament

Mother Teresa

We have a right to be happy and peaceful. We have been created for this - we are born to be happy - and we can only find true happiness and peace when we are in love with God; there is joy in loving God, great happiness in loving Him.

Meditations by Padre Pio -
Even if you had committed all the sins of the world, Jesus says to you; "Many sins have been forgiven you, because you have loved much" (CE,16).

The treasures of self-sacrifice

"The best influences in life are undeliberate, unconscious; when no one is watching, or when reaction to the good deed was never sought. Such is the long-range influence of a mother in a home; fulfilling of daily duties with love and a spirit of self-sacrifice leaves an imprint on the children that deepens with the years. St. Francis has done much to influence painting, though he was not an artist. Great artists have influenced millions to love beauty, though their intention was never to be so remembered."

St. Faustina's diary http://www.marian.org/directory_flash.html -
Oh, how ardently I desire that every soul would praise Your mercy. Happy is the soul that calls upon the mercy of the Lord. It will see that the Lord will defend it as His glory, as He said. And who would dare fight against God? All you souls, praise the Lord's mercy by trusting in His mercy all your life and especially at the hour of your death.

And fear nothing, dear soul, whoever you are; the greater the sinner, the greater his right to Your mercy, O Lord. O incomprehensible goodness! God is the first to stoop to the sinner. O Jesus, I wish to glorify Your mercy on behalf of thousands of souls. I know very well, O my Jesus, that I am to keep telling souls about Your goodness, about Your incomprehensible mercy. (598)

Jesus, You know that I love suffering and want to drain the cup of suffering to the last drop; and yet, my nature experienced a slight shudder and fear. Quickly, however, my trust in the infinite mercy of God was awakened in all its force, and everything else had to give way before it, like a shadow retreating before the sun's rays. O Jesus, how great is Your goodness! Your infinite goodness, so well known to me, enables me to bravely look death itself in the eye. I know that nothing will happen to me without God's permission. I desire to glorify Your infinite mercy during my life, at the hour of death, in the resurrection, and throughout eternity. (697)

JUNE 15 - DRAW EVER CLOSER TO THE FATHER

The Blessed Virgin wishes to draw us close to the Father:

Dear children, today I ask you to open your hearts to God like spring flowers which yearn for the sun. I am your Mother and I wish you to draw ever closer to the Father, that he may grant abundant gifts to your hearts. ( Weekly Message January 31, 1985).

One of these gifts is the vision to see form the perspective of heaven as God does:

So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God (Col 3:1-3).
Reflection:

The believer's real home, Paul says today, is with Christ in heaven. This gives us a different perspective on our lives here on earth. To "set your minds on things that are above," as Paul says today, means simply to look at life from God's perspective. Among other things, this is an antidote to materialism, for we gain a proper perspective of material goods when we take the Lord's view of them. From his viewpoint in eternity, how would he perceive money, prestige, or power? What of family, friendships, or acts of sacrifice? The more we see the life around us as God does, the more we can live in harmony with him. As Our Lady has advised in several of her messages, we must not become too attached to what is only temporary.

Application:

In prayer today, spend several minutes thinking of the priorities in your life. Then switch to God's viewpoint, and examine the same priorities. Is there a match?

Medjugorje Day By Day June 14 - YOU WILL ENDURE EVERYTHING

"Ever since, with Pentecost, the People of the New Covenant 'began their pilgrim journey toward the heavenly homeland, the Divine Sacrament has continued to articulate their days, filling them with confident hope' (ibid.). Thinking specifically about this, I wished to dedicate to the Eucharist the first encyclical of the new millennium and I am now happy to announce a special Year of the Eucharist. It will begin with the World Eucharistic Congress, planned from October 10-17 in Guadalajara (Mexico), and will end with the next ordinary assembly of the Synod of Bishops, which will be held in the Vatican from October 2-29, 2005, and whose theme will be 'The Eucharist: Source and Summit of the Life and Mission of the Church.' Through the Eucharist, the ecclesial community is built as a new Jerusalem, principle of unity in Christ between different peoples and nations."

Mother Teresa

We are all God's children so it is important to share His gifts. Do not worry about why problems exist in the world - just respond to people's needs.

Padre Pio -
I approve of your work for gaining souls for Jesus. By all means receive Holy Communion for the Holy Father's intentions (Letters III, p 463).

Archbishop Fulton Sheen

Words are cheap when there is no conviction behind them

"Whenever we set out to give `good example,' we generally do not give it. The best example is given when we are off duty and are not acting `professionally,' such as the minister or rabbi or priest when he comes down from his pulpit, the womanizer after he has finished his discourse on the `necessity of recognizing the rights of women,' the politician when he has finished his television oration on `my profound interest in social justice and my love of the common good.'

When Peter told Our Lord that though others failed Him, he would never fail, the Savior retorted that within twenty-four hours Peter would deny that he even knew Him. What we say is less important in the way of influence than what we do."

MEDJUGORJE DAY BY DAY.

JUNE 14 - YOU WILL ENDURE EVERYTHING

In the second month of the apparitions, the visionaries have a vision of Christ. Our Lady says to them:

My angels, I send you my Son, Jesus, who was tortured for his faith, yet he endured everything. You also, my angels, will endure everything (First Years July 27, 1981).

Similarly, Paul encourages the Thessalonians in their trials:

Therefore we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith during all your persecutions and the afflictions that you are enduring. This is evidence of the righteous judgment of God, and intended to make you worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are also suffering (2 Thes 1:4-5).

Reflection:

Every life includes trials and hardships. Theologians tell us it is the consequence of sin and evil in the world, which disrupts even nature affects the innocent as well as the guilty. Today, St. Paul teaches that God can draw good out of our hardships:

"For he is using your sufferings to prepare you for his kingdom."

Our problems can help us look upward and forward, rather than inward. They can help to build strong character, and they imbue us with an extra measure of compassion for others who are struggle. Problems are unavoidable for people of faith living in a faithless world. Yet, linked to the sufferings of Christ, they have a redemptive value and meaning.

Application:

Today, offer any hardships or pain you experience for a special prayer intention.

Medjugorje Day By Day June 13 - ACCEPT DIVINE PEACE

Mother Teresa

Mother Theresa once said, ALWAYS REMEMBER this saying: "Jesus only brings you peace, fear and anxiety come from the devil." If you feel anxious just Trust in God's Mercy and pray and your peace will return. You will be assaulted on all sides with health, with dryness, but Jesus and Mary are at your side.

And we here all have the greatest gift of all, Mary to intercede for us. To lay all of our prayers at the feet of her son. We have Mary at our side. Just think about the magnificence of Having the Mother of God at your side, pleading God's mercy for you and those you love. She leads us to her Son and wants to hear us say: "Jesus, I trust in You., the whole message of Divine Mercy".

Meditations by Padre Pio -

May Jesus be you guide, your support and your life, always and in everything (ASN,44).

Archbishop Fulton Sheen

The canvas must wait for maturity to grow

"There are certain conflicts and tensions which are natural to us as human beings, namely, the conflict between the flesh and the spirit. In the young it is not always clear which is dominant or will be the master during life. It takes a lot of struggle to give dominance to the higher part of our being. For that reason, an artist refused to paint the portrait of a young man. The artist said that he saw two impulses in the youth neither of which yet showed dominion. He would delay the portrait until his character was formed."

St. Faustina's diary http://www.marian.org/directory_flash.html -

After Communion, I heard the voice saying, My daughter, look into the abyss of My mercy and give praise and glory to this mercy of Mine. Do it in this way: Gather all sinners from the entire world and immerse them in the abyss of My mercy. I want to give Myself to souls; I yearn for souls, My daughter. On the day of My feast, the Feast of Mercy, you will go through the whole world and bring fainting souls to the spring of my mercy. I shall heal and strengthen them. (206)

God, One in the Holy Trinity.I want to love You as no human soul has ever loved You before; and although I am utterly miserable and small, I have nevertheless cast the anchor of my trust deep down into the abyss of Your mercy, O my God and Creator! In spite of my great misery I fear nothing, but hope to sing You a hymn of glory for ever. Let no soul, even the most miserable, fall prey to doubt; for, as long as one is alive, each one can become a great saint, so great is the power of God's grace. It remains only for us not to oppose God's action. (283)

MEDJUGORJE DAY BY DAY

JUNE 13 - ACCEPT DIVINE PEACE

Today Our Lady asks us to accept and live divine peace:

The attitude of the Christian toward the future should be one of hope in salvation. Those who think only of wars, evils and punishments are ill advised. If you dwell on evil, punishment, or wars, you are on the road to encountering them. Rather, your responsibility is to accept divine peace, to live it, and to spread it. (Locutionists Jelena & Mirijana August 1984).

And in Colossians, Paul also issues a call to peace:

Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful (Col 3:14-15).

Reflection:

In the beginning of the apparitions, the Blessed Virgin said: "Through prayer and fasting, you can avert wars and suspend the laws of nature." In a sermon on peace, Fr. Slavko Barbaric stated: "The Lord of Peace enables us to understand the profound importance of peace within our own hearts-for this is how it is spread throughout the world." The more hearts that live peace, the sooner will it flourish on earth. "Let us therefore," he concludes, "be instruments of peace, for blessed are the peacemakers-they shall be called the children of God.'"

Application: In addition to your prayers for peace, strive to be a peacemaker wherever you are today.

Medjugorje Day By Day June 12 - ENTER INTO THE MASS

"The Lord calls us friends, he makes us his friends, he entrusts himself to us, he entrusts to us his Body in the Eucharist, he entrusts to us his Church. Therefore, we must be true friends to him, we must have the same perception as he has, we must want what he wants and not what he does not want. Jesus himself tells us: 'You are my friends if you do what I command you' (John 15:14).
Let this be our common resolution: all of us together, to do his holy will, in which lies our freedom and our joy" (Pope Benedict XVI, May 13, 2005).

Mother Teresa -
Prayer in action is love, and love in action is service.

Meditations by Padre Pio -
Jesus, I love you very much; it is useless to repeat it to You, I love You. My Love, my Love. Only You! Praise be to You alone. (AD,38).

Archbishop Fulton Sheen -
The woes of confusion are legion

"One wonders if modern psychology has ever found a word which so adequately describes an unhappy and disturbed personality as the word legion. The word is found in the description of the mad man of the Gerasenes, who when asked by Our Lord to describe himself answered, 'My name is Legion: for we are many.' Notice the contradiction between my and we. He did not know what he really was, except that he was tossed about hither and thither by a crowd of wild and disordered impulses."

St. Faustina's diary http://www.marian.org/directory_flash.html -

I spent the whole day in thanksgiving, and gratitude kept flooding my soul. O my God, how good You are, how great is Your mercy! You visit me with so many graces, me who am a most wretched speck of dust. Prostrating myself at Your feet, O Lord, I confess with a sincere heart that I have done nothing to deserve even the least of Your graces. It is in Your infinite goodness that You give Yourself to me so generously. Therefore, the greater the graces which my heart receives, the deeper it plunges itself in humility. (1661)

O Jesus, eternal God, thank You for Your countless graces and blessings. Let every beat of my heart be a new hymn of thanksgiving to You, O God. Let every drop of my blood circulate for You, Lord. My soul is one hymn in adoration of Your mercy. I love You, God, for Yourself alone. (1794)

MEDJUGORJE DAY BY DAY

JUNE 12 - ENTER INTO THE MASS

Today's message concerns prayer and the Eucharist:

Always have God's love within you, for without this love you cannot convert yourselves completely. Let the rosary be in your hands in memory of Jesus. Dear children, strive to enter more deeply into the Mass as you should (Locution Jelena & Mirijana JUNE 1, 1985).

And in John's gospel, Jesus speaks of the Eucharist as well:

Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever (Jn 6:56-58).

Reflection: Fr. Slavko Barbaric offered these reflections on the Eucharist in a sermon given in Medjugorje in May of 1989:

Our Lady once said, "Come to church a little early," which I would interpret to mean about twenty minutes early, to prepare for Mass by offering the rosary. Also, we should remain after Mass for at least ten minutes in order to give thanks. [The Mass] is somewhat like a beautiful banquet spread out before us; if we do not take the initiative to socialize and eat the carefully prepared food, then the event is meaningless.

In the same way, if we eat the food quickly and then hurry away without thanking our host, it would be considered rude behavior. Likewise, hurrying away from Mass is disrespectful to the Lord. We need to spend some time giving thanks and praying for our healing as well as the healing of others. The Mass will have a real effect on our lives.

Application:

This Sunday, come to Mass early to prepare, and leave a bit later, in order to give thanks.

Medjugorje Day By Day June 11 - I WANT YOU TO BE HAPPY

"Ah, if we had the eyes of Angels with which to see our Lord Jesus Christ who is here present on this altar and who is looking at us, how we should love Him! We should never more wish to part from Him; we should wish to remain always at His feet. It would be a foretaste of Heaven. All else would become insipid to us." (St. John Vianney)

Mother Teresa

Works of love are always works of joy. We don't need to look for happiness; if we love for others we'll be given it. It is the gift of God.

Meditations by Padre Pio -
My Jesus, my sweetness, my love, love which sustains me (AD,50).

Archbishop Fulton Sheen

To uphold integrity, one must be honest through and through

"Crisis produces a hardened spiritual feeling which hinders understanding. Men do not like what they do not understand, or that which would demand a change in their lives. All the training of a university will not make certain persons mathematicians. If a person does not love truth and honesty, he cannot be made truthful and honest by expounding the definitions of these virtues. One must begin by creating within him conduct along the lines of these virtues; then he can be taught."

St. Faustina's diary http://www.marian.org/directory_flash.html -

This has been a great day for me. During this day I remained as though in unceasing contemplation; the very thought of this grace drew me into further contemplation; and throughout the whole day I continued in thanksgiving which I never stopped, because each recollection of this grace [of the Immaculate Conception of Mary] caused my soul ever anew to lose itself in God... (1416)

I want to live in the spirit of faith. I accept everything that comes my way as given me by the loving will of God, who sincerely desires my happiness. And so I will accept with submission and gratitude everything that God sends me. I will pay no attention to the voice of nature and to the promptings of self-love. Before each important action, I will stop to consider for a moment what relationship it has to eternal life and what may be the main reason for my undertaking it: is it for the glory of God, or for the good of my own soul, or for the good of the souls of others? If my heart says yes, then I will not swerve from carrying out the given action, unmindful of either obstacles or sacrifices. I will not be frightened into abandoning my intention. It is enough for me to know that it is pleasing to God. On the other hand, if I learn that the action has nothing in common with what I have just mentioned, I will try to elevate it to a loftier sphere by means of a good intention. And if I learn that something flows from my self-love, I will cancel it out right from the start. (1549)

MEDJUGORJE DAY BY DAY

JUNE 11 - I WANT YOU TO BE HAPPY

Today Our Lady gives us her purpose in coming to Medjugorje:

Dear children, I call each of you to begin to live in God's love. Dear children, you are ready to commit sin and to place yourselves in Satan's hands without reflection. I call on each one of you to consciously choose God and to reject Satan.

I am your Mother and so I wish to lead all of you to complete holiness. I want you to be happy on earth and then to join me in heaven. This is, dear children, my purpose in coming here, and my desire (Monthly Message May 25, 1987).

St. Paul also speaks of the happiness which is ours as heirs of Christ:

When we cry, "Abba! Father!" It is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ-if, in fact we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him (Rom 8:16-17).

Reflection: Paul uses the term adoption to illustrate the believers' new relationship with God. In Roman culture, one who was adopted gained all the rights of a legitimate child in his new family. He became a full heir to his father's estate. Likewise, when a person becomes a Christian, he or she gains all the privileges and responsibilities of a child in God's family. As the Creator's children we are no longer slaves. This is the core of the gospel message and the messages of Our Lady in Medjugorje: we are God's heirs, sharing in the great treasures of his kingdom. Even now he has given us the greatest of gifts: his Son, forgiveness, the Holy Spirit, and eternal life.

Application: The Blessed Mother states that, "I want each one of you to be happy here on earth and to be with me in heaven." That is her purpose and her desire. She asks only that we, "consciously choose God and reject Satan." In your own words make this commitment today in prayer.

Medjugorje Day By Day June 10 - THE GIFT OF LOVE

Mother Teresa
The pass word of the early Christians was "joy," so let us still serve the Lord with joy. Joy is love, joy is prayer, joy is strength. God loves a person who gives joyfully, and if you give joyfully you always give more. A joyful heart is the result of a heart burning with love.

Meditations by Padre Pio -
Oh, if I had an infinite number of hearts, all the hearts in Heaven and earth, your Mother's heart, Jesus, I would offer them all, every one of them to you! (AD,54).

June 11 My Jesus, my sweetness, my love, love which sustains me (AD,50).

Archbishop Fulton Sheen

Laying the foundation for building our stairs to eternity

"There are two kinds of wisdom: wisdom of the flesh and the wisdom which God gives. One is very often opposed to the other. The first would say this is the only life there is; therefore, we should get all we can out of it. The other sees that this life is a kind of scaffolding up through which we climb to eternal happiness; it will, therefore, be so used as a ladder to the Mansions of the Heavenly Father. But this Divine Wisdom comes only those who have qualifications for receiving it, and is one of the first conditions is good behavior. As Our Blessed Lord said, 'If anyone will do My Will, he will know My doctrine.'"

St. Faustina's diary http://www.marian.org/directory_flash.html -
Eighth day. O my Lord, while calling to mind all Your blessings, in the presence of Your Most Sacred Heart, I have felt the need to be particularly grateful for so many graces and blessings from God. I want to plunge myself in thanksgiving before the Majesty of God and to continue in this prayer of thanksgiving for seven days and seven nights; and although I will outwardly carry out all my duties, my spirit will nonetheless stand continually before the Lord, and all my exercises will be imbued with the spirit of thanksgiving. Each evening, I will kneel for a half hour in my cell, alone with the Lord. As often as I shall awake at night, I shall steep myself in a prayer of thanksgiving. In this way I want to repay, at least in some small way, for the immensity of God's blessings. (1367)

However, in order to make all this more pleasing in the eyes of God and to remove the least shadow of doubt from my mind, I went to my spiritual director [Father Andrasz] and revealed these desires of my soul to him; that is to say, the desire to be steeped in such thanksgiving. I received permission for everything, except that I should not force myself to pray at night should I awaken. (1368)

With what great joy I returned to the convent! And on the next day I began this great act of thanksgiving by renewing my vows. My soul became thoroughly immersed in God, and there issued from my whole being but one single flame of gratitude and thanksgiving to God. There were not many words because God's blessings, like a fierce fire, consumed my soul, and all sufferings and sorrows were like wood thrown into the flames, without which the fire would go out. I called upon all heaven and earth to join me in my act of thanksgiving. (1369)

MEDJUGORJE DAY BY DAY

JUNE 10 - THE GIFT OF LOVE

Today Our Lady speaks of our greatest need:

Love is a gift from God. Pray, then, that God may give you the gift of love (Locutionists Jelena & Mirijana May 28, 1984).

St. Paul remarks on the love of the Colossians:

This you learned from Epaphras, our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, and he has made known to us your love in the Spirit (Col 1:7-8).

Reflection:

The Colossians had such a great love for others because the Holy Spirit had transformed their lives. The ability to love our neighbor as Christ loves us comes through the grace of the Spirit. Scripture speaks of love as an action or attitude, not just an emotion; it is the fruit of our new life in Christ.

The Holy Spirit not only empowers us to love others, but also to recognize how much we are loved by God and the Blessed Mother. "You know, dear children, that I love you immeasurably," the Madonna once said, and each day I pray that the Lord will help you to understand the love I give you." When we comprehend that love, we cannot help but turn around and love others in return.

Application:

Since lose is a pure gift from the Lord, the Virgin asks us to, "pray that God may give you the gift to love." Today, let us devote our rosary to that intention.

Medjugorje Day By Day June 09 - ABANDON YOUR CONCERNS TO JESUS

St. Cristobal Magallenes and Companions, Mexican Martyrs—Feast, May 21 Between 1915 and 1937, 22 priests and 3 laymen gave their lives for the Catholic faith in Mexico. They drew their strength from receiving Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, in Mass and Adoration, and their love and devotion to their Blessed Mother Mary.

Mother Teresa
Love has no meaning if it isn't shared. Love has to be put into action. You have to love without expectation, to do something for love itself, not for what you may receive. If you expect something in return, then it isn't love, because true love is loving without conditions and expectations.

Meditations by Padre Pio -
Let us love Jesus for His divine greatness, for His power in Heaven and on earth, for His infinite merits, but also and above all out of gratitude. Had He not been so good to us but more severe, how much less we would have sinned!. But when sin is followed with profound sorrow, with an honest resolution of never sinning again, an intense understanding of the great pain we have given to the mercy of God; when having rent the hardest fibers of our hearts we manage to shed scalding tears of repentance and love then, my son, the sin itself becomes a steppingstone which brings us closer, which raises us up, which leads us to Him more securely (GF,171)

Archbishop Fulton Sheen

Into everyone's life the Son shines, enlightening us as to the mysteries of life

"G. K. Chesterton once said that God has put a tremendous mystery in nature itself and that is the sun. In the light of that one thing, which we cannot see because of its brightness, everything else is made clear. Likewise, thought we cannot comprehend the nature of God completely in this life, nevertheless, in the light of the truths which He revealed, everything else is made clear, such as the mystery of pain, suffering, death, life and birth."

St. Faustina's diary http://www.marian.org/directory_flash.html -
The Lord gave me knowledge of the graces which He has been constantly lavishing on me. This light pierced me through and through, and I came to understand the inconceivable favors that God has been bestowing on me. I stayed in my cell for a long act of thanksgiving, lying face down on the ground and shedding tears of gratitude. I could not rise from the ground because, whenever I tried to do so, God's light gave me new knowledge of His grace. It was only at the third attempt that I was able to get up. As His child, I felt that everything the heavenly Father possessed was equally mine. He himself lifted me from the ground up to His Heart. I felt that everything that existed was exclusively mine, but I had no desire for it all, because God alone is enough for me. (1279)

MEDJUGORJE DAY BY DAY

JUNE 9 - ABANDON YOUR CONCERNS TO JESUS

Today the Blessed Mother asks us to abandon our worries to her Son:

Why do you not put your trust in me? I know that you have been praying for a long time, but truly, surrender yourself. Abandon your concerns to Jesus. Listen to what he says in the gospel: "And who among you, through his anxiety, is able to add a single cubit to the length of his life?" (Locutionists Jelena & Mirijana November 30, 1983).

In Psalm 37, trust is seen as the remedy to anxiety:

Trust in the Lord, and do good;

So you will live in the land, and enjoy security.

Take delight in the Lord,

And he will give you the desires of your heart. Our steps are made firm by the Lord, And he will give you the desires of your heart. Our steps are made firm by the Lord, When he delights in our way, Through we stumble, we shall not fall headlong, For the Lord holds us by the hand.

---Psalm 37:3-4, 23-24

Reflection:

The confident trust that the psalmist and Our Lady speak of today is a sister virtue to acceptance. For some, such as members of Alcoholics Anonymous the spirit of acceptance can be a life and death matter, for it is indispensable tool in their recovery.

In chapter 17 of Alcoholics Anonymous' Big Book, a physician in the program writes:

At last, acceptance proved to be the key to my drinking problem to all my problems today. When I am disturbed, it's because I find some person, place, thing, or situation---some fact of my life---unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing, or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment.

Nothing, absolutely nothing happens in God's world by mistake. Until I could accept my alcoholism, I could not stay sober; unless I accept life completely on life's terms, I cannot be happy.

I need to concentrate not so much on what needs to be changed in the world as on what needs to be changed in me and in my attitudes.

With hard-won insight, the doctor speaks of his peace, or serenity, as inversely proportional to his expectations. The higher his expectations of other people are, the lower his serenity. "I can watch my serenity level rise," he says, "when I discard my expectations."

Application:

First, as Our Lady asks, abandon your anxieties and fear to her today, trusting in her great power. Second, as they do in AA meetings around the world, offer the Serenity Prayer. Keep it in mind for troubling times.

O Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference

SHORT POWERFUL PRAYER THROUGH ST. JOSEPH

"Glorious St. Joseph, tenderhearted father, faithful
guardian of Jesus, chaste spouse of the Mother of
God, I ask you to join me in praising God the Father
through His Divine Son who died on the cross and
rose again to give us sinners new life. Through the
Holy Name of Jesus, pray with me that we may obtain
from the eternal Father the favor we ask. (here
state your intention)."

Say this prayer for nine consecutive days.

Fear not! God is your shelter (the 23rd Psalm and the Lord’s Prayer. God never fails). Don’t fail him. Call on Jesus. Jesus on the mainline, tell him what you want!
