Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary Protectress of Africa

Holy Mary, Mother of God, Protectress of Africa, you have given to the world the true Light, Jesus Christ. Through your obedience to the Father and the grace of the Holy Spirit, you have given us the source of our reconciliation and our justice, Jesus Christ, our peace and our joy.

Mother of Tenderness and Wisdom, show us Jesus, your Son and the Son of God. Guide our path of conversion, so that Jesus might shine his glory on us in every aspect of our personal, familial and social lives.

Mother, full of Mercy and Justice, through your docility to the Spirit, the Counselor, obtain for us the grace to be witnesses of the Risen Lord, so that we will increasingly become the salt of the earth and the light of the world.

Mother of Perpetual Help, we entrust to your maternal intercession the preparation and fruits of the Second Special Assembly for Africa. Queen of Peace, pray for us! Our Lady of Africa, pray for us!

Yaounde, 19 March 2009

BLACK SAINTS OF THE DAY

Black Saints of the day—From the Black Saints reference book (James Wesly Smith), 456 pages, paperback, 1000 lines of Black and African Saints in the Latin Rite, Coptic and Orthodox branches of the Mystical Body of Christ (all Christianity combined) to year 599 A.D. Order from BarnesandNobles.com, Ingram Book Group internationally, Amazon, wherever online books are sold, or quickly from www.booklocker.com/books/3088.html

FOREWORD

We include here stories, legends, and myths of the black saints. Companion volumes (Black Saints Narratives, Writings of the Black Saints), cover a more comprehensive examination of the lives of these and other holy folk.

Now in the cultural anthropologic sense, the word myth does not mean fiction. Oral and historical traditions show a different reading.
Those following cultural anthropology templates (folklore) should be able to glean the kernels of "truth” hidden in the ether of time.

In this first volume, we primarily focus on the African East coast and Northern areas (Kemet, Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea, Cush, Abysinnia, the Mauretanias, Libya, and what now is Algeria. These areas proved to be the base of the Ancient African Church in the first 599 years, anno domini. Other volumes will contain additional areas, materials, for example, 600 A.D. to the modern era, as well as the annals, writings, and narratives of the Black Saints, Mystics, and Holy Folk.

Those not brothers and sisters, SKIP THIS PART!

An old Black adage reports, “your friends don’t need an explanation, and your enemies won’t believe it ‘no way’”. (Not that any readers are enemies, but brothers and sisters know my meaning). So how do we know the saints and companions are Black (instead of just African)?

In these pages, we used the age-old American test. Notwithstanding the legal examination (the “One drop rule”) we asked, “How would the inclusion candidate, and his or her companions fare in the American South in 1930s, segregation Mississippi, walking into a Ku Klux Klan rally?)

Or

Would the saint, mystic, and companions need an identity card in South Africa from the late 1940s to the early 21st century?

We also used the “birds of a feather” paradigm. What would happen to those “not black,” associating in the perilous times of martyrdom with those who were?

Still, some listed here aren’t ethnically black (unless you count HB Leakey’s discoveries that modern man (Homo Sapiens Sapien)-- the one drop rule-- walked out of Africa million(s) of years ago).

Black they are, nevertheless. The American South had a name for them. Presumably, South Africans in the 1940s to 1990s held like epithets.

So we include them. They helped lift up the Kingdom of God among Africans, and the descendants of the historical and geologic African Diasporas. These are reckoned among the “holy folk”.

Genesis of the Work

This writer tired of Western American church racism. Still extant but now waning in this 21st century, we tired of feeling we did not belong.

We tired of being psychologically unwilling or unable to receive Blood of Christ in Holy Eucharist without fear that some third- worlder would frown in disdain and refuse to drink afterwards.

Further, watching a music awards called Grammys one 1980s night, one prominent Black artist thanked the crowd for “teaching us about Jesus!” I nearly fell out of my chair.
Christianity came out of Africa, not to it! As did Yeshua—the Christ, Jesus. “That what was said through the prophet might be fulfilled, ‘Out of Egypt I called my son’”.

But we disparage no one’s (group, heritage, and ethnicity) involvement in the faith tradition. We desired, however, the little ones singing, “Yes, Jesus loves me!” included those with melanin. These need the knowledge of their historical involvement in The Way--the people of God of. Hence, this book.

In some instances, calendar dates differ while the saint may be the same. Changes in the calendars of the Latin, Byzantine, Coptic, Russian, or Greek rites (Orthodox) caused this. And some dates are approximate, due to the differences in the Latin Rite, Russian, Greek, and Roman, AND Western interpretations/translations of those calendars.

Again, under the “birds of a feather” model,we took names without dates from tombs sources, authorities, references to other saints in Africa, Kemet, and environs. Some duplicates appear due to name spellings. Others may be different entities, altogether.

Also, acclamation determined the saints in all the early church. Devotions arose for this or that holy person or martyr.

As this is remains a work in progress—we’ve found hundreds of saints we have as yet to include. And should the reader find any grammatical or other errors, please let us know at stbernice@yahoo.com. God will bless you all.

Author’s note and caveat: With Yeshua’s averment, “I am the vine, you are the branches…” (John 15:5), this writer submits that Christ Jesus knew His church would splinter.

Indeed, even Judaism had previously split into segments of Pharisees, Sadducees, and Essennes. Each manifested subdivisions in practice, depending in what continent/territory believers found themselves.

Since there were 12 working apostles plus 1, and disciples sent by Yeshua, and disciples of the apostles, themselves--inevitably, different church branches, rites, traditions grew.

This book—and following volumes- seeks to include all the saints discoverable, without the Western Church shenanigans of who follows whom. By way of background, the writer belongs to the African root of the Latin rite in the Oriental Church. But he reminds the reader (by way of example and not limitation), that not only is there an Archbishop of Canterbury, as well as the the Chief priest and Archbishop in the Eternal City, but there also exists Pope Shenouda II (as of this writing)-as well as their Holinesses Alexis and Bartholomew, and others administering branches of Yeshua’s universal Church.

The writer, Tielhard de Chardin, said years ago that the Church was in involution, slowly re-combining as Yeshua so desired in the beginning.

The foolishness of “who is and who ain’t” Christian or “Christian enough” won’t be found here. The reformation is over! (And the then dormant African Church wasn’t a part of it, anyway).

Do not forget that Jesus willed to remain, personally and really, in the Eucharist" (Pope John Paul II, March 11, 1979).

Mother Teresa
I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. I just wish that He didn't trust me so much.

Meditations by Padre Pio -
Rest assured that the more a soul is pleasing to God, the more it must be tried. Therefore, courage, and go forward always (Letters III p 401).

Archbishop Fulton Sheen
The Resurrection convinced the greatest skeptics: The Apostles!

"What is most peculiar about Easter is that although His followers had heard Him say He would break the bonds of death, when He actually did, no one believed it. They had to be convinced beyond all shadow of a doubt.

Of all the skeptics in the history of the world, none ever equaled the Apostles and the disciples and the holy women. Voltaire and the like were credulous babes compared to them in skepticism. Contemporary attempts to explain away the belief in the Resurrection psychologically fail to take this doubt into account."

St. Faustina's diary http://www.marian.org/directory_flash.html
Amid the greatest torments, I fix the gaze of my soul upon Jesus Crucified; I do not expect help from people, but place my trust in God. In His unfathomable mercy lies all my hope. (681)

Once, as I was going down the hall to the kitchen, I heard these words in my soul: Say unceasingly the chaplet that I have taught you. Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death. Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy. I desire that the whole world know My infinite mercy. I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy. (687)

Suddenly I heard these words in my soul: My daughter, I assure you of a permanent income on which you will live. Your duty will be to trust completely in My goodness, and My duty will be to give you all you need. I am making Myself dependent upon your trust: if your trust is great, then My generosity will be without limit. (548)

MEDJUGORJE DAY BY DAY

These thoughts for a day are taken from a daily meditation book based on the Messages of Our Lady of Medjugorje by Father Richard J. Beyer, Ave Maria Press.

APRIL 13 - CONTINUALLY GIVE THANKS

The Blessed Mother speaks of joy and thanksgiving today:

Dear children, today I invite you all to rejoice in the life which God has given you. Little children, rejoice in God the Creator for he has created you so wonderfully.

In your prayer, ask that your life be one of joyful thanksgiving, which flows from your heart like a river of joy. Little children, continually give thanks for all that you possess, for even the little gifts, which God has given you. In this way, a joyful blessing will always come down form God upon your life (Monthly Message August 25, 1988).

Psalm 92 also rings with the spirit of joy and thanksgiving:

It is good to give thanks to the Lord, To sing praise to your name, O Most High; To declare your steadfast love in the morning, And your faithfulness by night, To the music of the flute and the harp, To the melody of the lyre. For you, O Lord, have made me glad by your work; At the works of your hands I sing for joy. Psalm 92:1- 4

Reflection:

A spirit of gratitude and joy always accompanies our spiritual journey to God. In quiet moments of prayer we can recognize the beautiful array of gifts the Lord has bestowed on us. The following verses by an anonymous poet were written in that spirit:

Today upon a bus, I saw a lovely maid with golden hair; I envied her---she seemed so gay---and wished I were as fair. When suddenly she rose to leave, I saw her hobble down the aisle; She had one foot and wore a crutch, but as she passed, a smile… Oh, God, forgive me when I whine; I'm blessed, indeed! The world is mine… With feet to take me where I'd go, With eyes to see the sunset's glow, With ears to hear what I would know, Oh, God, forgive me when I whine; I'm blessed indeed! The world is mine.

Application:

Today, simply spend several minutes reflecting of God's gifts and expressing your gratitude for them.

Medjugorje Day By Day Apr 12 - DEVOTE YOURSELVES TO PRAYER

"Christians ought to be committed to bearing more forceful witness to God's [Eucharistic] presence in the world. We should not be afraid to speak about God and to bear proud witness to our faith" (Pope John Paul II, Mane Nobiscum Domine, 26

Mother Teresa
If you judge people, you have no time to love them.

Meditations by Padre Pio -
Take heart and don't fear the gloomy wrath of Lucifer. Always remember this, that it is a good sign when the enemy makes an uproar and roars around your will, as this shows you that he is not within you. Courage, my most beloved daughter, I offer you these words with great feeling and in Jesus; courage I say! There is no need to fear when we can say with determination, even if without feeling: "Long live Jesus!" (Letters III p 414).

Archbishop Fulton Sheen

There seems to be no rational for the rationalization of the Intelligentsia.

"Intelligentsia do not become members of a sect for an intellectual reason. That is why when discussing the sect with them, they never seem to understand it. Instead of a `reason' for becoming a member, they have only an `intention,' namely the desire to escape boredom. Their motives are alien to the rational."

St. Faustina's diary http://www.marian.org/directory_flash.html -

Love casts out fear. Since I came to love God with my whole being and with all the strength of my heart, fear has left me. Even if I were to hear the most terrifying things about God's justice, I would not fear Him at all, because I have come to know Him well. God is love, and His Spirit is peace. I see now that my deeds which have flowed from love are more perfect than those which I have done out of fear. I have placed my trust in God and fear nothing. I have given myself over to His holy will; let Him do with me as He wishes, and I will still love Him. (589)

I have noticed many times that God tries certain people on account of those things about which He spoke to me, for mistrust displeases Jesus. Once, when I saw that God had tried a certain Archbishop [Jalbrzykowski] because he was opposed to the cause and distrustful of it, I felt sorry for him and pleaded with God for him, and God relieved his suffering. God is very displeased with lack of trust in Him, and this is why some souls lose many graces. Distrust hurts His most sweet Heart, which is full of goodness and incomprehensible love for us. A priest should sometimes be distrustful in order to better ascertain the genuineness of gifts bestowed on a given soul; and when he does so in order to direct the soul to deeper union with God, his will be a great and incomprehensible reward indeed. But there is a great difference between this and disrespect and distrust of divine graces in a soul simply because one cannot comprehend and penetrate these things with one's mind, and this latter is displeasing to the Lord. I greatly pity souls who encounter inexperienced priests. (595)

MEDJUGORJE DAY BY DAY
These thoughts for a day are taken from a daily meditation book based on the Messages of Our Lady of Medjugorje by Father Richard J. Beyer, Ave Maria Press.

APRIL 12 - DEVOTE YOURSELVES TO PRAYER

The Blessed Mother speaks of her favorite subject today:

Dear children, today I call you to renew family prayer in your homes. Now that the work in the fields is over, devote yourselves to prayer. Let prayer take first place in your families (WM 11-1-84).

In Psalm 3, David speaks of attaining God's safety through prayer:

But you, O Lord, are a shield around me,

my Glory, and the one who lifts up my head.

I cry aloud to the Lord,

and he answers me from his holy hill.

I lie down and sleep;

I wake again, for the Lord sustains me. Psalm 3:3-5

Reflection: One of the gifts that often accompanies deep prayer is serenity, a sense of being safe in the hands of God. In this spirit St. Teresa of Avila wrote:
Let nothing disturb you,

Nothing frighten you;

All things are passing;

God never changes;

Patient endures

Attains to all things;

Who God possesses

In nothing is wanting;

Alone God suffices.

In view of this peace, it would not seem difficult to live the Madonna's call to devote ourselves to prayer.

And the fruit of prayer, of course, is serenity.

Application: Try to remain in quiet prayer today until you feel the peace of God within your heart.

Medjugorje Day By Day Apr 11 - I LOVE YOU IMMEASURABLY

"May the Virgin Mary preserve us in the joy of continually receiving the graces of the Savior . . . the very gift of God Himself, Who dwells with us in His Word, His Spirit and His Eucharist" (Pope John Paul II).

Mother Teresa
I have found the paradox that if I love until it hurts, then there is no hurt, but only more love.

Meditations by Padre Pio -
Be firmly convinced that the more the assaults of the enemy increase, the closer God is to the soul. Think of, and ponder well, this great and comforting truth (Letter III p 417)

Archbishop Fulton Sheen

Socializers' denial of morality and virtue make their world darker.

"If socializers' behavior were better, they would be truly religious people and do much good for society. They look for a cause which will leave them alone with their individual vices. They swallow the devil's line also because its anti-religious character satisfies their desire to expunge from the world all ideas of morality and virtue, the infractions against which have made them so uneasy in the dark."

In looking for purpose, bored Intelligentsia clamor for freedom and find it not within but without where they can disavow individual responsibility.

"The third group who have been caught on the hooks of the devil's fishing line are Bored Intelligentsia. Their education should have given them a goal or a purpose of life. Having failed to do so, their knowledge is nothing but a crazy quilt of unrelated facts and undigested bits of information. The want of unity both in their moral life and their knowledge makes them desirous of unity, but not a unity from within which demands moral stamina, but a unity from without. Certain sects provide that for them. They no longer have to think; the sect does the thinking for them. They now have a mission, a sense of belonging to a totality, and one in which they are no longer bored by their freedom, having surrendered it to the collective ant hill of the sect."

St. Faustina's diary http://www.marian.org/directory_flash.html -

On one occasion, I saw Jesus in a bright garment; this was in the greenhouse. [He said to me,] Write what I say to you. My delight is to be united with you. With great desire, I wait and long for the time when I shall take up My residence sacramentally in your convent. My spirit will rest in that convent and I will bless its neighborhood in a special way.

Out of love for you all, I will avert any punishments which are rightly meted out by My Father's justice. My daughter, I have inclined My heart to your requests. Your assignment and duty here on earth is to beg for mercy for the whole world.

No soul will be justified until it turns with confidence to My mercy, and this is why the first Sunday after Easter is to be the Feast of Mercy. On that day, priests are to tell everyone about My great and unfathomable mercy. I am making you the administrator of My mercy. Tell the confessor that the Image is to be on view in the church and not within the enclosure in that convent. By means of this Image I shall be granting many graces to souls; so let every soul have access to it. (570)

MEDJUGORJE DAY BY DAY

These thoughts for a day are taken from a daily meditation book based on the Messages of Our Lady of Medjugorje by Father Richard J. Beyer, Ave Maria Press.

APRIL 11 - I LOVE YOU IMMEASURABLY

Our Lady speaks of love today:

"Dear Children, I thank you for the love which you have shown me. You know, dear children, that I love you immeasurably, and that I pray to the Lord daily that he may help you to realize more fully the love which I bear you. That is why, dear children, pray, pray, pray (Weekly Month August 21, 1986).

Paul also speaks of love:

For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. And now faith, hope and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these of love (1 Cor 13:12-13).

Reflection:

Clearly love is the very essence of God's nature and the motivating force of our faith. We could spend our lives attempting to fathom its depth.

For centuries, writers and poets have sought to express God's love in their verse. In modern times, one beautiful passage was written by Major Malcolm Boyle, who was killed in action after the landing on D-day in June, 1944. He had written the following lines in his Bible:

If I should never see the moon again Rising red gold across the harvest field, Or feel the stinging of soft April rain, As the brown earth her hidden treasures yield.

If I should never taste the salt sea spray As the ship beats her course against the breeze, Or smell the dog-rose and the new mown hay, Or moss and primrose beneath the tree.

If I should never hear the thrushes wake Long before the sunrise in the glimmering dawn. Or watch the huge Atlantic rollers break Against the rugged cliffs in baffling scorn.

If I have said goodbye to stream and wood, To the wide ocean and the green clad hill, I know that he who made this world so good Has somewhere made a heaven better still.

This I bear witness with my latest breath Knowing the love of God, I fear not death.

Application:

Let us pray especially today to more fully comprehend the love of God

Dear Friends,

The Guard at the Tomb

The next day, the one following the day of preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate and said, ?Sir, we remember that this imposter while still alive said, ?After three days I will be raised up. Give orders, then, that the grave be secured until the third day, lest his disciples come and steal him and say to the people, ?He has been raised from the dead. This last imposter would be worse than the first. Pilate said to them, The guard is yours; go secure it as best you can. So they went and secured the tomb by fixing a seal to the stone and setting the guard. Matthew 27:62 66

Yesterday we had a beautiful sunny day although it was cool. Today there are clouds and we will not see the sun very much. The forecaster predicts snow during the night and tomorrow. I hope this will be the last snowstorm of the season.

I went to the Immaculate Conception Church, Palmer Road, yesterday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. for the Good Friday Liturgy. The church was full and it was moving. In the evening I was back at the same church for a dramatized Way of the Cross that was very moving and again the church was full. I will be there again this evening for the Easter Vigil celebration and Holy Mass.

Yesterday I was with Jesus on the cross and He shared with me His suffering. Since my retreat in Jerusalem where I suffered the Passion of Our Lord for two weeks, I always suffer with Jesus on Good Friday. In this way He shows His great love for me and for all the people of the world.

Here is a message given by Our Blessed Mother to Joseph. She spoke to him in these words, Let us go today to the tomb of My Dear Son and pray awhile. Let us not get too close as the guards are there. During the time of silence I prayed to the Father that He send the graces won by My Son Jesus to all the people that they might be converted and come to believe in Him.

Many in the world are far from My Son and they live in sin. May the New Pentecost come soon so that a new era may begin. My Son's suffering and painful death on the cross was not in vain. May the power coming from the cross enlighten all the people to believe in their Savior and follow Him.

I was present at the cross and at the burial of My Son Jesus. I suffered great pain in seeing how horribly He suffered until His death. However, before He died He said these words to the Apostle John, This is your Mother. And to Me He said, This is your son. At that moment I became the Mother of all of you as John stood for each one of you.

As your Mother, I wish to bring you all to Jesus, My Son, so you can be washed in His Blood and be His followers. Look up at the cross today and say just like the centurion, Truly, this is the Son of God. May the new era of grace begin. I bless you all.

P.S. I wish you all a Happy and Joyful Easter!

MY DEAR DEAR PRECIOUS LITTLE CHILDREN,

THIS IS YOUR FINAL HOUR - THESE LAST DAYS SHALL BE UPON YOU AS HEAVY A CROSS YOU HAVE BEEN ASKED TO CARRY. BUT DO NOT BE AFRAID OR FEAR YOU WILL BE CRUSHED UNDER ITS WEIGHT. THIS IS NOT SO. YOU WILL RISE ABOVE THE CROSS TO NEW FOUND STRENGTH AND A DEEPER COURAGE.

DO NOT FEAR FOR THOSE YOU LOVE. THEY ARE SECURE IN MY HEART. I WILL HOLD THEM CLOSE AND THEY WILL BECOME AWARE OF GOD'S LOVE AND MERCY. LET YOUR HEARTS BE TRUSTING, NEVER FALTERING IN WEAKNESS. YOU WILL SEE GOD'S GLORY AND YOU WILL BE SATISFIED. BE CAUTIOUS THESE NEXT DAYS AND DO NOT SUCCUMB TO THE TRIALS OF YOUR NATION. BE ALERT TO THE EVIL THAT HAS ENTERED THE JUDAS' OF THE WORLD. REMEMBER JUDAS' FATE AND THE TRIUMPH OF JESUS OVER ALL EVIL.

MY WORDS STIR IN YOU ANXIETY. THOUGH YOU TRY, YOU STILL FIND IT HARD TO TRUST IN MY WORDS, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU CARRY CONCERN FOR YOUR FAMILIES. I TELL YOU - TRUST, TRUST, TRUST. GOD IS LOVE AND MERCY AND IT SHALL FLOW TO THOSE YOU LOVE, MUCH LIKE AN OCEAN. TRUST, TRUST, TRUST. GIVE OVER YOUR ANXIETY TO ME AND I WILL DISPOSE OF IT.

NOW I DESIRE TO HELP YOU THESE NEXT DAYS. FOLLOW YOUR HEARTS. BE OPEN TO JESUS THAT HE MAY FILL THEM TO OVERFLOWING. WHAT IS YOURS CANNOT BE MEASURED, BUT WILL CONSUME YOU. YOUR JOY WILL EXCEED ALL ELSE AND YOU WILL REMAIN EVER OUR DEAR DEAR PRECIOUS LITTLE CHILDREN.

I GIVE THIS NIGHT A SPECIAL BLESSING. IT WILL HELP YOU IN THE DAYS AHEAD AND IT WILL REMAIN WITH YOU FOREVER. I GIVE THEN THIS BLESSING IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, THE SON, AND HOLY SPIRIT. THE BLESSING OF CHRIST FALLS ALSO UPON YOU RECEIVE IT AND THEN PRAISE AND THANK GOD FOREVER.

Jesus Shares His Gift With Those Who Die For Him!

On Saturday I visited church and made the sacrament of penance. At the 8:00 AM Mass today, I made small offerings to Jesus and Mary and remembered all those in prayer with special needs and intentions.

Prior to receiving the most sacred Body and Blood of Christ in the sacrament of Holy Communion, I made an Act of Contrition prior to the taking of the Sacred Host After receiving the Body and Blood of Christ, I knelt in silent commune with Jesus. I thanked Him for His many blessings and affirmed my love and faithfulness to Him. In prayer I asked Jesus to remove all thought and sight from my heart and soul that I might be open to hear or see only that which comes from Him. Then I prayed; Speak Lord (if it be His will), Your servant listens.

I began to see only soft tranquil shades of blue. I was not sure if the colors reminded me of the sky or the sea.

Then Jesus spoke saying; Peace! Eileen My child, I AM the risen Christ! I bring My peace to all who will die to sin. In dying to sin, you will be once again raised up and share eternity with Me!

SHORT POWERFUL PRAYER THROUGH ST. JOSEPH

"Glorious St. Joseph, tenderhearted father, faithful
guardian of Jesus, chaste spouse of the Mother of
God, I ask you to join me in praising God the Father
through His Divine Son who died on the cross and
rose again to give us sinners new life. Through the
Holy Name of Jesus, pray with me that we may obtain
from the eternal Father the favor we ask. (here
state your intention)."

Say this prayer for nine consecutive days.

Fear not! God is your shelter (the 23rd Psalm and the Lord’s Prayer. God never fails. Don’t fail him. Call on Jesus. Jesus on the mainline, tell him what you want!
